Is Your Past Making Your Decisions for You?

Is your past making your decisions for you without you realizing it?

In this episode of the Mr. Internatianil Podcast, we explore how unresolved childhood experiences, emotional trauma, coping mechanisms, and survival patterns can quietly shape our adult relationships, careers, habits, reactions, and major life decisions.

Some qualities we consider part of our personality—people-pleasing, perfectionism, emotional distance, hyper-independence, constantly seeking approval, avoiding conflict, or needing control—may have started as ways of protecting ourselves.

Those strategies may once have helped us survive. But what happens when they continue operating long after the original danger is gone?

In this episode, we explore:

• How childhood experiences can influence adult behavior
• Why coping mechanisms are often mistaken for personality traits
• How emotional triggers can cause disproportionate reactions
• Why familiar patterns can feel safer than healthy ones
• The difference between understanding your behavior and excusing it
• How to create space between an emotional trigger and your response
• Why awareness, accountability, and self-compassion must work together
• How therapy and honest self-reflection can help interrupt repeated patterns

The purpose of examining the past is not to blame our parents, excuse harmful behavior, or remain trapped in childhood. It is to understand what we have been carrying forward—so we can finally choose what happens next.

You may not be responsible for everything that happened to you. But as an adult, you are responsible for what you do with what happened to you.

What behavior did you once consider part of your personality that you now recognize may have been a coping mechanism?
